3 Networking Pitfalls to Avoid When Migrating to The Cloud

At this point most companies have started their migration to the cloud considering the tangible benefits in agility and cost savings. One of the ares that is commonly overlooked when migrating to the cloud is the network. Having workloads running in different location stretches the corporate network beyond the corporate firewall and the traditional VPN solution cannot even keep up with the security requirements. We wanted to discuss with you the top 3 networking pitfalls that “company name” needs to avoid when creating your new Cloud Network:

1. Cloud Lock In

seems to be the best solution today can easily change in the near future. When migrating any networking component to the cloud like a VPN you should always consider how portable the service, could you migrate it to another cloud tomorrow? One of the best ways to approach this is moving away from traditional appliances and investing in technologies that offer a “Capacity Pool” that you can effortlessly distribute across all of your clouds. When moving the the cloud it is easy to become dependent on our provider for many services, make sure it doesn’t happen with your network

2. Rigidness Traditional VPN

A few years back it was much easier to delineate the corporate networks because they were built like fortresses. Anything inside was considered safe and anyone outside could get a special pass called a VPN to connect, very black or white. Fast forward to today, where applications and infrastructure is running all over, that black or white approach comes no where close to the business needs. The new network edge is the user and the technologies implemented should be able to understand the context (who, what, where, and when) in realtime to determine the level of access. The traditional VPN struggled to keep up with security and user experience the datacenter era, don’t bring that problem along with you to the cloud

3. Lack of Visibility & Automation

There are many reasons to migrate to the cloud but one of the new challenges introduced is how do you keep visibility across all your clouds. There are two important metrics that you need to track in real time to ensure success: performance and security. These metrics should be available in a single dashboard that feeds information from all your providers and has the intelligence to discard false positives and not overload the team with useless warnings. Additionally, in the fast paced world, it is not enough for the system to present the information to the administrator but should also be powered by AI to make determinations and take actions hence removing human dependency and gaining efficiency. When you had everything in you datacenter it was easy to monitor, make sure it is just as easy now because in the cloud it is much easier to get “lost”
As you migrate to the cloud it is important to make sure all of your components Infrastructure, Network, Storage, and Applications do so harmoniously. Leaving one of the components behind posses a serious risk in successfully migrating and could slow your progress down to a screeching halt. We’re committed to helping companies maximize their cloud investments and accelerate the migration plans.
