3 Top Considerations When Deploying High End Workspaces

There are so many ways that organizations are trying to leverage digital workspaces. One of the most coveted, but at the same time the most challenging to build and maintain, is the digital workspace for the power user. These are people whose work requires advanced computing resources like a designer working with high end graphics or a developer compiling large applications. Power users often present a huge roadblock when making a digital transformation due to how demanding their work environment is. To keep them working at the top of their game, we always design a power user’s digital workspace with these three considerations in mind:

1. Latency

One of the biggest complaints of the typical power user is speed. Even a tiny amount of latency can present an insurmountable obstacle to their daily operations. Power users are sensitive to minor dips in performance that are negligible to a typical task worker. In other words, for them speed isn’t just nice – it’s essential. The key to mitigating this common issue is physical space. Light can only travel so fast, so by deploying the virtual machines to a geographically closer location, the latency and subsequent performance drops are reduced significantly.

2. GPUs

With physical hardware, it’s obvious that a designer can’t do their work off a simple laptop. And yet, you’d be surprised how often power users like designers are expected to work off of standard resources in the cloud. Introducing GPUs as part of the deployment is a great way to give power users the performance they demand from a virtual machine. By leveraging GPUs, we’ve actually seen many Power Users increase their productivity compared to when using local devices because the cloud environment lets them tap into a brand-new computer every time they connect.

3. Optimizations

Nowadays there are tons of automated options to allow businesses to quickly spin up virtual desktops. Many of these options are standard and work well for task workers that don’t demand a high level of performance from their system. However, it’s vital to optimize a power user’s environment, from things like mapping drivers to selecting the correct virtualization technology. Pre-configured digital workspaces are attractive to many IT organizations whose top priority is to move to the next client. However, as we hope it’s clear, the “next, next, finish” mindset is bound to fall short for power users.
